Why SmoothStar is the best Surf Skate?

 

Many customers ask us why SmoothStar is the best surf skate… why is it just so similar to surfing? Well we have been answering this question for many years so we thought we would record a detailed analysis for our followers. We took SmoothStar and another Surf Skate through its paces to document the differences.


First – we wanted to make sure it was tested under the same conditions. This includes the same: wheel base, deck length, wheels, wheel hight and wheel hight to the ground.

Test 1 – Simulating surfing turns

For this test, we wanted to simulate a real surfing turn, performing this with correct body movement and compression in the lower body through the turn. We found that SmoothStar turns “smoother” consistently through the arcing turn. We also found that the extra turn of the Thruster, resulted in more critical turns.

Test 2 – Turning Arm Strength

This test looked at the strength of the turning arm when force or when pressure is applied. The longer the turning arm, the more stress is applied to the pivot. Even though SmoothStar had a longer turning arm, it still appears to be stronger when pressure is applied. This means less breakages and stress on the components when performing critical manourvers such as airs and floaters. We also noticed that the other surf skate had more bearings exposed on the pivot – increasing the chances of dust and dirt.

Test 3 – Carving ability

Carving on a wave  is one of the most important elements of the testing. Due to the added angle of the Thruster, the wheels grip the street surface while performing a carve. This enables the rider to push the board harder – but still providing a Smoother ride.

As we see from some of the stills, the Thruster not only turns but dips as well. We tested that you could carve the board easier regardless of whether you wanted a wider or narrow stance.

The SmoothStar has an allen key which makes more or less resistant – perfect for customising to lighter or heavier surfers.

The end result that we were able to perform more turns over the same distance. In the video footage, we can clearly see how many more turns you can do.

Test 4 – Component Setup

There is a noticeable difference is how both components are setup. Interestingly – SmoothStar can be attached to most truck types. This provides customisation to the type of ride – For example, putting the SmoothStar Thruster on a wider truck axel.

Test 5 – Linking your turns

This was an area which was very noticeable, as soon as you stepped on the SmoothStar, you found that you could transition from one turn to the other turn. This makes it easier for a surfer to link their turns.

In the video, we see the weight transition from one side to the other side. SmoothStar has more resistance and spring assistance – enabling you to carver SmoothStar through your turns. As we see in the “carving count” over the same distance, SmoothStar did 9 turns to the other systems 6.

Test 6 – Progressive surfing manoeuvres

Due to the strength and turning arc, we found that riders could perform a higher level of progressive surfing manoeuvres. These include: backside air, front side air, power gouges, cutbacks and more.

The Final Summary

The SmoothStar was clearly out on top. It also reflects the many emails and praise we receive from the product all over the world. That is… “SmoothStar is the closest thing to surfing outside the water.
